Do white cockroaches exist?

Ehrlich Answers

"I’ve just spotted what looks like a white roach, and I’m a bit freaked out. Do white cockroaches exist?"

Most people are used to cockroaches being dark brown or black, so spotting a white bug that looks like a roach can be a little confusing.

There are no separate species of white cockroach. What you’ve probably seen is a regular cockroach that has just molted. After shedding its old exoskeleton, a cockroach’s new shell is soft and pale - sometimes appearing almost white. Within a few hours, it hardens and darkens to the familiar brown color. So while white cockroach-looking bugs are real, it’s just part of the cockroach’s life cycle.
