Do roach bombs actually work?

Ehrlich Answers

"I tried a bug bomb for roaches and they came back — do roach bombs actually work, or am I wasting my money?"

Bug bombs, sometimes called roach bombs or foggers, can seem like a quick fix for a cockroach problem. The spray fills the air and settles on surfaces, killing roaches out in the open. But cockroaches spend most of their time hidden: behind walls, in drains, under appliances, and deep inside cabinets. A bug bomb simply won't reach them there.

Even the best bug bombs for roaches tend to deliver short-term results at best. Surviving roaches keep breeding, and new ones can reappear within days or weeks. Worse, roaches that sense the chemicals may scatter into other areas of your home, spreading the problem further.

It's also worth noting that foggers leave chemical residue on food-preparation surfaces, which can pose a health risk if not thoroughly cleaned afterward.

Christopher Sablich from our Binghamton, New York team explains more in the video below:

Can I use bug bombs for roaches in apartment buildings?

Bug bombs are not a long-term solution in any home, but they are especially ineffective in apartment buildings. They may temporarily drive roaches out of your unit, but in a shared building, cockroaches simply retreat into neighboring apartments, wall cavities, or drains and return once the chemicals wear off. Even if every unit used a roach bomb at the same time, roaches can still hide in cupboards and drains, so the infestation will persist.
