Do bed bugs only come out at night?

Most people assume bed bugs stick to the dark. It's a reasonable assumption: you wake up with bites, but you never actually see anything. The truth is a little more nuanced.

Are bed bugs nocturnal?

Bed bugs are generally nocturnal. Their peak activity tends to fall between midnight and 5 a.m., when most people are in deep sleep and less likely to notice a feeding. During the day, they retreat into tight cracks and crevices close to where you sleep, hiding in mattress seams, bed frames, baseboards, and upholstered furniture.

That said, do bed bugs only come out at night? Not always. Light itself doesn't keep them away. What they're really responding to is the presence of a warm, still host. If that host is available during the day, bed bugs can and will come out.

Why do bed bugs come out in daylight?

Here are a few reasons why bed bugs can come out during daylight hours:

They're hungry

If a property has been empty for a while, or a bed bug hasn't fed in some time, hunger can override its preference for darkness. The drive to feed becomes stronger than the instinct to stay hidden.

Your sleep schedule is different

Bed bugs adapt to their host's routine. If you work nights and sleep during the day, bed bugs in your home may shift their feeding pattern to match. They'll come out during the day when you're asleep.

The infestation is large

When a population grows large enough, hiding spots become overcrowded. Bugs get pushed out into the open more frequently, including during daylight hours. Seeing bed bugs during the day is often a sign that an infestation has been building for some time.

Where do bed bugs hide during the day?

During daylight hours, bed bugs stay close to where they feed. Common daytime hiding spots include:

  • Mattress seams and tufts
  • Bed frames and box springs, particularly in joints and screw holes
  • Headboards, especially wooden ones with cracks or crevices
  • Baseboards and wall gaps close to the bed
  • Upholstered furniture such as sofas and armchairs
  • Behind loose wallpaper or wall hangings

Their flat bodies allow them to squeeze into spaces as narrow as a credit card, making them very difficult to spot without a thorough inspection.

Does leaving the light on keep bed bugs away?

This is one of the most common myths about bed bugs and light. Leaving a light on will not stop bed bugs from feeding. If they're hungry and you're nearby, they'll come out regardless. It might delay them briefly, but it won't protect you.

The only reliable way to address a bed bug problem is through professional treatment. Our pest control team can carry out a free inspection and advise on next steps, which may include heat treatment, steam, or chemical options, chosen based on the size and location of the infestation.
