Do bed bug mattress covers work?

When bed bugs show up, the instinct is to act fast. Stripping the bed, bagging the pillows, and grabbing whatever protective cover you can find seems to make sense. But not all mattress covers are designed to repel bed bugs, and even those that are won't solve an infestation on their own.

So, do bed bug mattress covers actually work? The right one can help, but only if you know what it can and can't do. Here's a straightforward look at what mattress covers offer, where they fall short, and what actually helps to get rid of bed bugs for good.

Mattress protectors vs. bed bug encasements

These two products are often confused, but they're not the same thing.

  • A mattress protector is designed to guard against spills, stains, and general wear. It typically covers the top and sides of a mattress, leaving the underside exposed. Bed bugs can still access the mattress through the open bottom.
  • A bed bug mattress encasement is different. It fully encloses the entire mattress — top, sides, and bottom — with a zipper that seals completely. Encasements may be made from different materials and should prevent bed bugs from squeezing through. For the encasement to work properly, the zipper must close fully with no gaps.

Do bed bug encasements work?

A proper bed bug encasement, as opposed to a simple mattress protector, can offer two specific benefits:

  • Trapping existing bed bugs: If bed bugs are already living in your mattress, a sealed encasement can trap them, cutting off their access to you. Bed bugs can survive for months without feeding, so the encasement needs to stay on and intact for an extended period.
  • Protecting a clean mattress: If your mattress is currently free of bed bugs, an encasement can help prevent them from taking up residence inside it.

However, it's worth noting that these pests don't just live in mattresses. They hide in bed frames, box springs, baseboards, furniture, and even electrical outlets. An encasement covers only one piece of the puzzle, so trapping bed bugs within the mattress without addressing the entire infestation is unlikely to work.

Bed bug encasements are only one part of the solution

A mattress encasement is a supportive tool, not a treatment. If you have an active infestation, whether it’s at home or in a business, an encasement alone won't resolve it. Sealing the mattress removes one hiding spot, but bed bugs are resourceful, and they'll likely simply find another.

If you've spotted the signs of an infestation (bites, blood stains on bedding, dark spots on your mattress seams, or a musty odor) an encasement is not the first call to make. The priority is a professional inspection.

At Ehrlich, our technicians are trained to identify bed bug activity and recommend the right course of action. We use a range of bed bug control methods — including heat treatments, steam, and chemical treatments — tailored to the severity of your infestation.

Frequently asked questions

A standard mattress cover won't stop bed bugs from biting you. A fully sealed bed bug encasement can trap bugs already inside the mattress, but bed bugs living elsewhere in the room will still be able to reach you. A professional treatment can address the full infestation.

Bed bugs can survive for several months without feeding, so an encasement needs to stay on — and stay intact — for at least a year to be effective at starving any trapped bugs. Any tears or zipper failures during that time can allow bugs to escape. That said, simply trapping bed bugs within a mattress isn’t a complete solution in itself.

No. A mattress encasement is a useful supporting measure, but it's not a substitute for professional treatment. If you have an active infestation, bed bug removal services are the most reliable way to help eliminate bed bugs throughout your home.
