If you’re spotting little black worms in your shower area, it’s probably drain fly larvae. These ‘shower worms’ are small, dark, and squirm in damp areas like grout lines or around the drain, and are actually just immature flies.
It usually comes down to moisture and organic buildup. Drain flies lay eggs in the slimy film that forms inside drains or in the grout, where water and soap residue collect. Once the eggs hatch, you’ll notice what look like black worms in the shower’s grout or around drains.
Although these pests aren’t harmful to people, they are a sign that something is thriving in your drains. Cleaning out the drain with boiling water and a brush, and scrubbing visible buildup, may reduce the larvae temporarily.
Often, though, you may need bioremediation services to treat the infestation at source. If you’ve cleaned your shower and drains and you are still finding the larvae, give us a call. We can help identify the cause, target breeding sites, and help protect your home from future infestations with professional fly control.
