Does salt kill fleas, or is it a myth?

Ehrlich Answers

"My neighbor told me that salt kills fleas. Does it really work?"

Fleas are tiny, fast-moving pests that feed on the blood of animals and people. Although pets are a common way they enter a home, fleas can also come inside on clothing, shoes, or other pests, like rodents.

Some DIY guides recommend using table salt for fleas, but the truth is that it’s not an effective long-term solution. Sprinkling table salt on carpets or pet bedding may dehydrate some flea eggs or larvae, but it won’t eliminate adult fleas or reach those hiding deep in flooring or furniture.

Others recommend a variation, salt water for fleas. But the issue is essentially the same: it might irritate or even kill a few, but it won’t address the root of the problem. Fleas reproduce quickly and spend much of their life cycle in inaccessible areas.
