Does fumigation kill bed bugs?

Ehrlich Answers

"I think I have bed bugs and want to get rid of them for good - Does fumigation kill bed bugs?"

Structural fumigation - which involves tenting a property - is typically an extremely effective way to kill bed bugs and other pests. A gas is released throughout the sealed structure, penetrating furniture, walls, and fabrics to destroy bed bugs at all life stages, including eggs, nymphs, and adults. During the process all tenants, pets and plants need to be evacuated for several days. Bed bug fumigation is typically only used for stand-alone buildings and may not be available in all service areas.

In apartment buildings, fumigation for bed bugs and other pests becomes far more complex. Because bed bugs can move between walls, vents, and shared spaces, every connected unit needs to be treated at the same time. If even one unit is missed, the infestation can easily return. That’s why fumigation is rarely the first choice for these types of properties.

Other treatments for bed bugs

Fumigating an entire property may not be the most appropriate action for your bed bug infestation. Other options include:

  • Heat treatments: One of the most effective options for eliminating bed bugs in all life stages. Technicians raise the temperature in affected rooms to a level that bed bugs can’t survive, without using chemicals.
  • Steam treatments: This works in the same way as heat treatments, but utilizes steam instead of dry heat.
  • Chemical sprays and liquid treatments: Applied directly to cracks, crevices, and hiding places where bed bugs live. These treatments can help reduce infestations and protect against re-infestation when used as part of a larger plan.
  • Ongoing monitoring: Follow-up inspections ensure that bed bugs haven’t returned and help identify any remaining activity early.
